Cape Disappointment

We were off on our next adventure to Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco, WA.
It was a Schneider family trip!!  Grandma and Grandpa got there the same day we did and then Paul, Katrina and the girls joined us a couple of days later.

Our girls were excited to see the YURT!  We'd never been inside one before....it was a great way to "camp" together.  We brought our trailer and everyone else stayed in two yurts.

It felt nice to be out of the truck!  So we headed down to the beach!

It was a little windy and cool, but sooooooo BEAUTIFUL!!!!  There were a TON of pelicans in the water and flying around. They were feeding on something, but we never could tell exactly what they were catching.  AMAZING birds!

Since it was a little chilly that evening, we didn't spend much time at the beach.  We were also able to make it to a Ranger Talk after dinner.  "Trash or Treasure" was the topic.  She was talking about all the things you can find on the beach at the park.

We discovered overnight that raccoons are very resourceful carnivores.
Grandma and Grandpa had some yummy steaks packed away safely in their locking cooler.
When we got up in the morning this is what we discovered....

Muddy pawprints and the corners of all the steaks eaten.

I think Grandpa was ready for raccoon stew.  (Later in the week we actually saw the culprits coming out from under the yurt.  A mom and baby raccoon who had their den under the yurt.)

The weather that next day turned out to be a BEAUTIFUL, sunny, not too windy and pretty warm day at the beach!
Avery and Grandma started planning their sand sculpture at breakfast.  Then it was down to the beach to get started. :)  They've got skills.....

(This was actually in town after the sand sculpting contest.  I just loved this! :) )

Avery's was a little less "professional".   But still very cool!  She was very proud of their work!

She had the waves drawn in and a sun on top of the water.
Below the water they had created a starfish, jellyfish and sea turtle.
I'm not sure who had more fun.  Avery or Grandma?! :)

Mark couldn't resist the sand either.  He simply started digging.

Annalise loved it!

It was a perfect day at the beach!

The weather turned a little cooler which gave us the perfect opportunity to go check out Long Beach.  You know....that is where you'll find the BIGGEST frying pan in the WORLD!

Annalise had her first SOLO carousel ride!

Then we hit the arcade.  This place was VERY cool!  Everyone got in on the arcade action!

And Annalise found another carousel!

Cape Disappointment State Park has two lighthouses.  On the north side is the North Head Lighthouse.  We took a little hike out to see it up close.

The view from the lighthouse looking back at our beach.

We took the lightkeeper's trail on the way back.  What a view they had on their walk to work!

Avery and Annalise were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their cousins Bella and Elsa!!!
FINALLY they arrived!! :)  We waited to go to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center until they could join us.  What a FASCINATING piece of our history!  I think everyone enjoyed learning a little more about their journey.

The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse is located near the interpretive center which is on the south end of the park.  We had a perfect view of the mouth of the Columbia River entering the Pacific Ocean.

The girls all had a good time running through the batteries....and the LITTLE girls liked screaming in them. Makes a SERIOUS echo!  You can see what the BIG girls thought of the screaming (ears covered)!

Uncle Paul had a serious knee surgery which put him pretty much out of commission on this trip.
Luckily we could drive right onto the beach in Long Beach and he could enjoy some beach time with us!

We had a great day at the beach.  A little windy....but great for kite flying!

Also did a LOT of playing in the sand!

Grandma helped dig some sand loungers for the girls....

It was another great day at the beach!

There was even a little bit of time to do some crafting in the yurt.....

It was a FANTASTIC family trip!
