Girl Scout Work Party

There are many things I love about Girl Scouts.  Avery has learned so much (and gained so much in confidence and awareness of community) in just the 3 years she has been a part of the troop.  This year the girls did a WOW (Wonders of Water) Journey.  It's a series of lessons that focus on water.  One of the lessons is about how the girls might Save and Protect water.   Our AWESOME troop leader, Michelle, got in touch with the local Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association.  They were THRILLED to get together a Girl Scout work party to plant some trees and teach our girls a little more about protecting our watershed.

We met at a woman's property on Squalicum Creek in Bellingham and learned about how planting trees can help prevent erosion, etc. in the creek which makes for a better habitat for salmon.  They brought 30 trees for us to plant and told us it would be alright if we weren't able to get that many planted in just an hour.

The girls were ready!!!!  After getting some information and a safety talk, they got their gloves and shovels and were good to go!!!

We all headed down to the creek for a quick lesson in proper planting and then the girls dug right in!

Even us grown-ups pitched in and got some trees planted!

It was a great work party!!!  We were successful in planting ALL 30 trees!!  The girls had a great time planting and learning about how they were helping keep the water clean for lots of salmon to spawn in Squalicum Creek each fall.  What a great way to learn about SAVING and PROTECTING water in our communities!

Way to go Brownie Girl Scouts!!!!
